Who…and how?

February 19th, 2008 by Ephemeris

More and more questions appear regarding the election of the future EU President. Even the former French president, Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, has several comments on the matter: ‘Election du Président du Conseil européen : quelle procédure préalable ?’.

There will probably be a committee or a ’study group’ (as VGE says) who will propose an election procedure. Ok, I agree. But this procedure will have to be also voted/agreed upon by all member states / by their representatives. And the Kosovo events might influence the discussions.

A very interesting idea was proposed on Stanley’s blog, but most likely it will, like always, be decided behind closed doors.

By the way, I hope that your comment section allows html tags.

Hello, rz. Welcome and sorry for delayed reply, I had several days of vacation. Yes, as I’ve just discovered, thanks to you, :), my comment section does allow html tags.
Yes, Alain Lamasourre’s proposal seems alright, for now. I would probaly prefer that candidates, before declaring themselves publicly, to obtain a list with minimum of [supporting] signatures from MEPs (20-50 etc.- anyway, more than the MEPs from their own country). I am aware that the EU Parliament is a different European institution, but this might be the idea - to obtain signatures from elected EU representatives.
As for Sarkozy (I’ve read yout last post) - more and more I see him as a better dressed version of our president, Basescu - they are very ‘colourful’ personalities, both talk about non-existing coalitions, they know everything, they are best experts in absolutely every field, they both end up by being dangerous clowns, and last but not least - they are friends (so does Traian Basescu want to believe, I think he’s totally wrong).
