Nine countries ready to join Schengen

December 10th, 2007 by Ephemeris

Nine countries will join the Schengen Agreement on December 21st: Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia (i.e. 9 of the 10 countries that joined the EU in 2004).
Officials in Brussels decided that all nine countires are ready to join the zone, but they need to maintain a high level of security and to strictly and efficiently meet the Schengen area’s requirements at all times.
Eighteen interior ministers of current and upcoming member states of the Schengen zone met in Prague to debate how all Schengen members adopt an upgraded version of the zone’s information system - a key requirement for the expansion.
All current and future Schengen members have been connected to the system, through which since Aug 31 they have been sharing information such as data on missing or wanted people.

Oh, really?! What about our bumps?

October 22nd, 2007 by Ephemeris

Romania will help Montenegro to avoid bumps on road to EU, said president Basescu during the visit of his Montenegrin counterpart Filip Vujanovic

Romania wants to share with Montenegro the experience it gained during the EU and NATO accession process. We are prepared to put at your disposal competent advisers who worked on (our) entry into the EU. That will allow you to avoid mistakes that we ourselves made during this process.

…added Traian Basescu.

Knowing Basescu, I wonder if Montenegro had even the chance to ask for this kind of support from Romania, the country that did not catch the 2004 wave, and now is facing the risk of salvgardation clause.
I hope Montenegro will find better alternatives.
